Hi! My name is Maya Lannan, and I am originally from Rochester, Massachusetts. I have always appreciated the proximity to Cape Cod and Boston; however, I began to grow tired of the cold winters and sought greater independence by pursuing opportunities away from home. During a visit to a friend, I discovered the University of Tampa. Initially, I planned to attend a different institution, but upon arriving on campus, I recognized that this was the right place for me.
The transition to living a plane ride away from home proved to be quite challenging at first. Nevertheless, through the unwavering support of my dedicated parents, my family in Massachusetts, and the remarkable lifelong friendships I forged, I was able to overcome my initial anxieties. I am surprised that my time here is drawing to a close.
I am of mixed heritage, being half white and half Cape Verdean, which has presented both challenges and advantages. I take great pride in my identity and cherish being part of a large family that encompasses diverse ethnicities and cultures. As an only child, I have been fortunate to have two extraordinarily caring and selfless parents. Although I recognized that remaining in Massachusetts was not my desire following high school, I value the brief visits home more than ever. I deeply miss my family and Cat, yet I take pride in my accomplishments and experiences during my time away. I am also sincerely grateful for the relationships I have cultivated, which have significantly contributed to my journey.
